High Voltage substation and switchboard maintenance

Location: Smelter in Port Pirie, South Australia

STE mobilised a team to the Nyrstar smelter at Port Pirie in South Australia to conduct HV switchboard and transformer maintenance during a two-week scheduled shutdown.

The facility is located in regional South Australia 230 km from the STE head office, and the team were required to relocate to Port Pirie for the two-week period.

Our technicians conducted the servicing and oil replacement on thirty oil-filled circuit breakers and switches, the servicing of SF6 insulated switches and circuit breakers in Schneider SM6 RMUs, the inspection and injection testing of corresponding protection relays, and the oil sampling and high voltage testing of 33/0.415kV transformers.

Specific hazards encountered at the site included lead dust, noise, confined spaces, asbestos cladding, PCB oil, high voltages and people-vehicle interaction.

These hazards were managed according to the STE safety and environment policies and procedures. Daily risk assessments were completed, and amendments to job-specific SWMS were made. There were no reported incidents recorded during the works.
