The company responsible for the operation and management of a utility-sized solar generating facility in regional South Australia engaged STE to conduct the functional testing of all enabled elements of the protection relays, confirm the relay settings against the “As Commissioned” documentation, and test the 110VDC back-up battery systems and 240VAC UPS equipment.

The client requested that these tests were conducted during non-generating periods to minimise the loss of production. Accordingly, STE allocated resources to work night shifts. Upon testing completion, a detailed report was provided to the client which included the testing results, observations, defects and recommendations.

The relays tested were Siemens 7SJ82, 7PA263291AA00-1, 7UT85-SIP5 models and SEL787 and 751 models. Our commissioning team have the relevant manufacturer’s software to enable them to successfully perform the tests.

The planning of these works was a challenge, given that the site was located in regional South Australia. The STE fatigue management policy dictated that it would not be possible to mobilise and complete a twelve-hour work shift on the same day.

An agreeable solution, which included rest or down time was reached, and the testing was completed within the allotted timeframe without incident. STE provided detailed reports to the client within ten working days as agreed.
