HV electrical assets have a projected life cycle and require replacement either when the timeline is reached, or due to a catastrophic failure.
STE was engaged to replace six failed 33kV current transformers in a HV substation located in regional South Australia that had reached the end of their life expectancy.
The scope of work was inclusive of:
- The development of switching instructions and outage planning
- The disconnection and removal of the existing transformers
- The designs and installation of new concrete footings and steel support structures
- The installation of the replacement transformers including primary and secondary connections
- Conducting the full suite of HV tests
- The commissioning of the new units; and
- The energisation of the units.
Pre-mobilisation works included the development of safety documents, SWMS and COVID-19 procedures, the engagement of a civil contractor, a transport company and a crane hire company.
Mobilisation from the STE head office to site required the team to drive 450 km and arrange accommodation and meals for a period of fifteen days.
