HV testing and commissioning of switchgear, cable and motors

Location: South Australia

STE were engaged by the SA Water Corporation to conduct inspections and tests on the 3.3kV cables, pump motors and switchboard as per a defined maintenance schedule at the SA Water Blue Lake facilities in regional South Australia.

The facilities are located in Mount Gambier, a five (5) hour drive from the STE head office. Regular travel breaks/rests were taken and contact with the project manager was made every two (2) hours as per the STE travel management plan.

Mobilisation to site commenced the day prior to the planned outage. All travel was within South Australia, and no impacts were encountered due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Prior to commencing work, site inductions were conducted by the client and upon completion the following tests were undertaken during a scheduled outage.

3.3kV Induction motor testing included:

  • Insulation measurements
  • DC winding measurements
  • Leakage reactance and impedance test; and
  • Winding die-electric loss angle measurements.

3.3kV Cable testing:

  • Insulation measurements
  • Tan delta measurements
  • Partial discharge measurements; and
  • Sheath testing.

Protection relay testing:

  • Over current; and
  • Earth fault.

3.3kV Circuit breaker and motor contactor testing:

  • Insulation
  • Ductor; and
  • Trip coils.

At the completion of testing, all equipment was returned to service and a detailed report was provided to the client within the agreed timeframe of ten (10) business days.
